For the last few days I have been using Firefox 3.5 beta 4. So far in these last few days the only real difference I have noticed is that it has not crashed on me. Firefox 3.0 would crash after a few days of being open. After researching, I have found that others have the same problem. If you keep Firefox running for a few days with several tabs open, the browser seems to go insane. It will want all your ram and all your cpu cycles. Not sure if it’s a memory leek problem or what, but it does happen.
So far with the new beta, I have not experience these problem at all. In fact the browser seems to be doing very well. I will need a few more days to make sure, but so far so good.
The design is very similar if not exactly the same as 3.0. The options menu and a few others are slightly different in design. The speed of the browser may be a bit faster. It’s hard to tell and if the speed has increased, it’s such a small amount that it would be hard to measure.
The private browsing mode is nice I suppose, but haven’t used it. I hear a lot about this feature on browsers, but have never been that interested in them. They can certainly be handy to have on occasion, but you must remember that they are not really as private as the companies who make them would have you believe. There are many reports that the information is still saved to your hard drive when visiting sites in private mode. In fact so far I have not seen one single browser that will not in some way still track where you have been. Hopefully the browser companies will fix this soon. You also need to remove where you have been if there are any flash animations on the pages. Flash will store the sites you have been even while in private browsing. This is not really a problem with the browser, but with Flash itself. Adobe is currently working with the browsers so that flash will not store the sites while in private browsing mode.
Overall I had really hoped for more out of the new Firefox. That is not to say it’s bad, but the improvements are just not as radical or noticeable as I had thought they might be. Perhaps this is just how advanced the browsers themselves have become. Maybe they can’t make anything that will Wow people, or maybe it’s just me. Regardless, the browser is nice and everyone will want to upgrade. It’s still the best browser, but Google Chrome is catching up fast. With Firefox, there are many things to like and few to dislike. Download it and try it today.
