wdhddBacking up is crucial to keeping your data safe, but actually doing the backups can be a pain. As a result, many people do not do regular backups. This is where the Western DIigital Essentials Hard Drive can come in handy. The drive is small and doesn’t require an external power source, so the hookup requires only hooking up the usb port. The drives are great for on the go use since an external power source is not needed. But are they really worth having?

These drives use a small 2.5” drive made for laptops and come in sizes from 160 to 500 Gigabytes. I can place my Passport Essentials drive in my shirt pocket. While the drives are small and easy to use, they will not break any read and write speed records. This should not be a concern as the size of these drives will more than make up for the slow speed. My large 1TB My Book Hard Drive is much faster, but it requires external power and is spinning at 7200 RPM.

I have not tested any of the software that is included with the drive. This is normal for me. I like to use other software or no software at all, but this should not keep you from trying the software. The software may help you with your backup needs.

The speed is really the only drawback when dealing with the Passport Essentials drives. The convenience of having a drive with me nearly all the time is the biggest selling point. I have and do recommend these drives to almost everyone who has a computer. Many people I know use these as their backup drive of choice and with 500 Gigabytes available, you can backup nearly anything you need.
