tomtom-one-xlI was walking through Toys R Us with my wife and son and noticed the GPS units. I had been pondering purchasing a unit since so many people were raving about the usefulness of the devices. I stopped and glanced through what they had in stock and noticed that there was a unit for $151.00. The united seemed nice and even had a 4.3 inch widescreen viewer. I knew through my limited research that this was a good price for any GPS unit with a widescreen monitor. I decided to pick one up since the price seemed nice.

Once I got back home, I decided to look the unit up on the Internet and see if I got a good deal or not. The lowest price I could find was $299.00 for the same unit. Great, I got a great deal.

The unit is simple but still has most of the necessities. The screen is 4.3 inches and is very bright. In fact most of the time I have the brightness set to the lowest level it will go. It’s just that bright. The One XL will calculate a route very quickly. Of course the further away from your destination you are, the longer it will take to calculate. If you are in the same town or even a neighboring town, the speed is almost immediate. With the ability to plan your routes, avoid routes, the TomTom One XL has the ability to do just about anything you need.

There are a couple of things that are a little disappointing about the TomTom. The TomTom One XL does not speek street names. This is a feature that can be important at certain times. Most of the time, it’s not a problem. The Points of Interest are also a little on the low side. There have been many times where I will try and look up a business or some point of interest and the item I am looking up will not be in the database. There are only about three and a half million POI in the database, but higher end TomTom units have many more POI. I believe the Go 9xx series have in the range of 6 to 8 million POIs in their database.
