The first episode of The Andy Griffith Show actually started off pretty well. When most shows start off, you can usually tell that the show is new and the producers have no idea what direction they are going. The actors will be uncomfortable and the camera work usually suffers. Star Trek The Next Generation is a perfect example of this. It’s not quite so bad for The Andy Griffith Show. One can definetely tell the first episode is an early filming for the show, but it’s not so overly bad in the production that it is distracting.
The first episode as one would expect sets up the characters and their relationship with one another. Barney’s humor is a little off in this episode. Andy is in near perfect form. In fact, I really do prefer his character in the early episode compared to later in season three and on. Andy seems to get more and more depressed as the show continues. The rest of the characters pretty much fill in where they always do. Opie is terrific in this first.
The show is one of my favorites and still is enjoyable after all the watching over the years.
